Gryphons Drop Second Half Opener

The University of Guelph women's volleyball team dropped their second half opener, 3-2 to the Queen's Gaels in Kingston this afternoon (Jan. 7).

The Gryphons drop to 4-4 while the Gaels advance to 7-3 in the OUA Standings.

It seems every meeting between the two teams is a battle and the first set today was no different. Neither team was able to grab a substantial lead, but a couple of late errors by the Gryphons allowed Queen's to take a 25-22 victory.

The second set started similarly but Guelph built a lead later in the set and won 25-16 to even the match. Brooke Lloyd (Whitby, ON) turned her ankle on a play at the net early in the third set but Guelph hung tough through much of the set before finally succumbing 25-22.

Things looked good for Queen's in the fourth as they took an early lead but the Gryphons again continued to fight turning a 22-19 deficit into a 25-23 win sending the match to a fifth set.

Unfortunately, some shaky passing early on, cost Guelph and they weren't able to make up the difference dropping the deciding set 15-9.

"We fought pretty well today but had too many streaks of errors which put a lot of pressure on us," said Coach Funk. "Erinn Bickle (Whitby, ON) was very good for us today but we needed to have a more balanced offense to get a victory."

Bickle led the offense with a whopping 25 points (14 kills, 10 blocks, 1 ace) followed by Kaitlyn Krizmanich (Carlisle, ON) with 12 (eight kills, three aces, one block). Guelph's road trip continues in Kingston tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. against RMC.
