The Gryphon field hockey team went 2-1 this past weekend, playing a trio of games in Toronto at Varsity Field.
On Saturday, in the first game the Gryphons defeated the Waterloo Warriors 2-1. The Gryphons had a little trouble adjusting to the surface after playing at home the previous week. As a result, there was no score at the break. However, one minute into the second frame, Alison Little (Toronto, ON) put Guelph on the scoreboard as Sam Anderson (Delta, BC) made a one time sweep pass into the circle to Little who hit the post and picked up her own rebound to put the Gryphs up 1-0. At 55:00, the Warriors retaliated to even the score. With eight minutes remaining, Brittany Seidler (Oliver, BC) sniped the winning goal off a penalty corner for the 2-1 victory. Rookie sweeper Laura Straus. (Kitchener, ON) and left defender Jess Jarrell (Guelph, ON) were extremely solid in the backfield. Kaye McLagan (Mitchell, ON) earned the win.Â
In game two, Guelph annihilated Queens 9-2 in their first outing of the season. Brittany Seidler recorded a hat trick, her third of the season and 12th marker to lead the OUA in scoring. Rookie Candice Hawksworth (Oakville, ON) also netted a hat trick while Erin Houle (Burlington, ON), Taylor Docherty (Victoria, BC) and Laura Straus added singles. Seidler, Amy Wise (Surrey, BC) and Alison Little had 2 assists each while Jess Jarrell, Courtney Lacey (Guelph, ON), Alexis Wagner (Guelph, ON), Houle and Laura Gordon (Cambridge, ON) had one apiece. Meghan Hurst (Coquitlam, BC) backstopped Guelph in the victory.Â
Sunday proved to be a disappointing day for the Gryphons as they dropped a 3-0 loss to the home side Toronto. Despite dominating 85% of the play in the first half, by the break, Guelph trailed 2-0.Â
In the second session, Toronto carried the play for the first 10 minutes and from that point forward, possession was equal. With eight minutes on the clock, Toronto hit the top shelf to increase the gap to three. The red black and gold were awarded nine penalty corners to Toronto's five and had several really good opportunities to even the score including a 4 on 1 but failed to capitalize. Erin Houle, Sam Anderson, Alexis Wagner, Courtney Lacey and Jess Donaldson had strong games for Guelph. Â
The Gryphs are now 4-1 and head to Kingston next weekend to play McGill on Saturday and Western on Sunday.
