Feb. 5: Guelph 3 - McMaster 0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-19)
GUELPH - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team finished their regular season home schedule with an impressive 3-0 win over the McMaster Marauders on Saturday.
On a night when seniors Kylen Van Osch, Claire Sandor, and Melissa McGinn were honored for their outstanding contributions to the volleyball program, they saved their best work for the court halting McMaster's 14 game winning streak with the sweep.
Guelph was highly motivated for the match and it showed early in the first set as they jumped out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back winning 25-14. McMaster was next to jump out to an early lead in set 2 leading 7-3, but the Gryphons responded quickly to lead 10-9. The second half of the set saw Guelph increase their lead gradually to win again 25-18. Set 3 saw the Gryphons start fast again leading 10-6 before expanding the lead throughout the set. McMaster never got closer than 6 points after that and Guelph pulled away to seal the win at 25-19.
"We won the battle of serve and serve receive tonight and never let Mac have any momentum and those were the deciding factors in the match. We had good offensive balance again with Melissa McGinn distributing the ball very well," said head coach Paul Funk.
Offensively, Erinn Bickle (8 kills, 3 aces, 3 blocks) and Brooke Lloyd (12 kills, 2 aces) led Guelph with 14 points each followed by Claire Sandor with 9 (5 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks) and Kylen Van Osch with 8 (7 kills, 1 block).
The Gryphons wrap up their regular season schedule on the road next weekend in Kingston against RMC on Saturday and against Queen's on Sunday.
