Feb. 13: Guelph 3 – Queens 1 (25-17, 17-25, 25-12, 25-20)
KINGSTON, Ont. – The University of Guelph women's volleyball team secured top spot overall in the OUA as they defeated the Queen's Gaels 3-1 in Kingston on Sunday. Guelph finishes the regular season with a 16-3 record tying them with McMaster but take top spot overall based on winning the head-to-head tie breaker.
The Gryphons started well in set 1 opening up a 3 point lead early and maintained the margin before pulling away later to win 25-17. Strong Queen's serving enabled them to reverse the momentum in the second set and tie the match with an identical 25-17 win. In set 3, the Gryphons retook the momentum opening up a 13-8 lead. A combination of Queen's errors and strong Guelph defense led to a relatively easy 25-12 win. The fourth set would prove to be the most competitive set as each team took turns siding out consistently. However, at 19-18, the Gryphons broke through to take the lead and after a couple of Queen's hitting errors, Guelph secured the 25-20 win.
"Our girls really rebounded well today after a less than stellar effort the day before. Our consistency and determination has been growing with each match since the New Year and we feel really good about our play so far," said coach Paul Funk.
The Gryphon offense was led by Kylen Van Osch with 15 points (13 kills, 2 blocks) followed by Erinn Bickle (9 kills, 3 blocks) and Claire Sandor (11 kills, 1 block) with 12 points each.
Guelph will now host an OUA quarter final against Brock on Saturday, Feb. 19th. Stay tuned to gryphons.ca for up-to-date playoff schedule information
