The University of Guelph women's volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to the Western Mustangs on Saturday night in London.
Guelph played well enough down the stretch in the first 2 sets to secure 25-21 & 25-22 wins. However, Western began to shift the momentum at the end of the third set and carried it through the fourth set as well winning 26-24 & 25-23. The fifth set started with Guelph jumping out to a 2-0 lead, but a 10-0 run by Western effectively decided the set. Guelph produced a late run but was not able to make up the difference losing 15-10.
"This was a tough loss that we all have to share in. We had opportunities to win all of the first 4 sets but our consistency wasn't there when it mattered. We played well at times, but gave up too many runs late in sets." stated head coach Paul Funk.
Guelph's offence was led by Erinn Bickle with 15 points (11 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks) followed by Brooke Lloyd with 14 (13 kills, 1 block) and Taylor Crown with 13 (11 kills, 1 ace, 1 block).
The Gryphons head into the December break at 4-3 in the 8th and final playoff spot. Guelph will head to Brandon in between Christmas and New Year's to play against Brandon, McGill and Dalhousie and restart a busy second half schedule in Kingston on January 7th at Queen's.
