The Guelph Gryphons certainly have a flair for the dramatic. Friday night the Gryphons battled the Lakehead Thunderwolves to a shootout before losing 4-3.
The Gryphons have gone to overtime or shootout during their last four games and have played extremely well despite not having several veterans in the lineup due to injury. But they have made no excuses and have continued to grind out points in their last six games.
The Gryphons opened the scoring on a hard working goal in the offensive zone finished by
Philip Teri(Elora) and set up by
Jon-Thomas MacDonald (Niagara Falls) and hometown boy
Justin Gvora(Thunder Bay). Lakehead responded with two goals of their own before the end of the period by Mike Hammond and Chris de la Rande.
The only goal of the second period was scored by Lakehead on the powerplay by Hammond to finish the period with a 3-1 lead. Guelph outshot Lakehead 14-11 in the frame.
Guelph continued their never say die style in the third and scored early in the period on a marker by captain
Kristafer Belan(Florence) set up by
Benjamin Clarke (Halifax, N.S.) and Cale Jefferies (Glenboro, Mn.). That was followed by a powerplay goal by Gvora on a setup from
Andrew Merrett (Vernon, Ont.). Guelph completely dominated the period outshooting Lakehead 20-6.
The Gryphons controlled the overtime and outshot the Thunderwolves 5-0 in the stanza but could not manage the winner.
Finally in the fourth round of the shootout Adam Sergerie managed the only goal for the win for Lakehead.
Â
Guelph outshot Lakehead 48-30 on the night and Guelph went 1/2 on the powerplay while the Thunderwolves went 1/4 with the man advantage.
Cody St Jacques went the distance for the Gryphons and Alex Dupuis went all the way for Lakehead.
The same two teams go at it again Saturday night in Thunder Bay at 7:30 P.M.
