Gryphons Win a Tight One at Home

Guelph 3 vs. Queen's 2 (25-15, 21-25, 18-25, 25-19, 15-13)

GUELPH, Ont. - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team pulled out a five-set squeaker against the Queen's Gaels on Friday night at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Center. Set scores were 25-15, 21-25, 18-25, 25-19 & 15-13.

Guelph got off to a great start in set one, passing well and mixing up their offence which kept Queen's off balance for most of the set.

Another great start in the second set saw the Gryphons surge ahead 13-6, but Guelph took their foot off the gas and Queen's seized the opportunity. The Gaels went on a 19-8 run to win the set and get back in the match tying it up at a set apiece.
In set three, it was Queens' turn to jump out to an early lead at 5-0 but Guelph clawed their way back into the set at 13-12. However, the Gryphons lost their defensive intensity allowing a number of balls to fall uncontested resulting in a Queen's win at 25-18.

To start set four, Guelph took an early lead and maintained a two point advantage through the first half of the set. The Gryphons then reeled off an 8-1 run in the middle of the set before winning comfortably at 25-19 forcing a fifth set.

In the deciding set, both teams battled back and forth with Guelph leading at the change over 8-7. Queen's then went on a 5-2 run to lead 12-10, but the Gryphons refused to go quietly and fought back to tie it at 13. From there, a Taylor Crown (Victoria, BC) kill and an over dig block by Erinn Bickle (Whitby, Ont.) sealed the 15-1

3 Guelph win.

" It was a real rollercoaster night for our group," said head coach Paul Funk. "We started well, then played very passively and without a lot of fight in the middle of the match. Fortunately, we got ourselves back on track in the fourth and it gave us a chance to win at the end. Not exactly how you would draw it up, but we played well enough to get a W. Tomorrow, we will have to keep our foot on the gas against a very different opponent."

Kaitlyn Krizmanich (Carlisle, Ont.) led the Guelph offence with 15 points (11 kills, 3 aces, 1 block) followed by Brooke Lloyd (Whitby, Ont.) with 13 (11 kills, 2 blocks).

The Gryphons home weekend continues on Saturday when they will host the RMC Paladins at 6pm.
