Gryphons 3-0 on weekend

Gryphons Women's Lacrosse went 3-0 this past weekend and in the process downing 2 of the top ranked teams in the OUA league.

The Gryphons started the weekend with a rematch from last weekend against UOIT. The strong Gryphons attack and solid defence was no match for the young Ridgeback program, and the end result saw the Gryphons winning 16-1. Playing well and earning game All-Star honours was veteran Lydia Kovacks.  Goals for the Gryphons were spread across 8 players with Captains Stacey Pogue, Staci Morris and Dana Skyvington each earning 3.  Veteran player Jade Sullivan also notched 3.  Rookie Katelyn Cartwright earned herself 2 while Lydia Kovacs and Breanne Gillie contributed 1 each to the final score.

The second game had the perennial powerhouse of the Laurier Golden Hawks fall to the Gryphons in what was one of the best comebacks in Gryphon Women's Lacrosse history. The Gryphons got off to a slow start falling behind the Golden Hawks 5-1 early in the first half. The team, led by game All-Star Jade Sullivan, proved they are going to be a team that can not be taken for granted. The first half finished with the Gryphons down 7-4. The team came out flying in the second half and dominated in both ends of the field and chipped away at the score until they were ahead and never looked back. The Gryphons out scored the Golden Hawks 8-2 in the second half and the final whistle saw the Gryphons win 12-9 and go 2-0 and for the day.  Leading the strong Gryphon offense in goals was veteran player Amy Johnson with 4.  Jade Sullivan contributed another 3 while Breanne Gillie and Staci Morris notched 2 against the Hawks.  Captain Dana Skyvington also put one past the Hawks netminder.

The final game of the weekend was a rematch from the season's first weekend against the host U of T Varsity Blues. Again the Gryphons got off to a slow start, but once again chipped away quickly and took the lead early in the first half. The Gryphons misfield game vastly improved over the weekend and became their strongest asset. In addition the Gryphons possessed the ball for close to 15 out of the last 18 minutes of the game. The final score was 8-5 for the Gryphons. Katie Smith had an outstanding game playing solid defence and earned game All-Star honours.  Captains Pogue, Morris and Skyvington lead the scoring with 3, 2 and 1 goals respectively.  Jade Sullivan and Breanne gillie also contributed one each to the win.
