Gryphons dominate Ridgebacks, 8-1, & get 1st season win

GUELPH, Ont. - The Gryphon men's team won their first home-game of the regular season Wednesday night (Oct. 19th) against the UOIT Ridgebacks. The Gryphons dominated over the Ridgebacks during a tense and rough game, and took the win 8-1. This brings the Gryphons standings to 1-4-0, and leaves the Ridgebacks with 0-4-0.

The beginning of the game started up slow, with both teams having equal possession of the puck and a couple shots on each net. The pace picked up after the first goal of the game was captured at 8:10 in the first by Gryphon rookie Jamie MacIntyre (Charlottetown, PEI) after an assist from Mike McInerney (Toronto, ON). UOIT's offence responded with a goal from Jesse Stoughton (Bobcaygeon, ON) who out-skated Guelph's defensive line and shot straight past Gryphon goalie Andrew Loverock (Elmvale, ON). Sitting at a tie, tensions began to mount on the ice, and the first of many penalties to come was handed out after a four-member fight broke out outside Gryphon net.

The second period saw many more Gryphon goals, along with more fights and penalties. Only 41 seconds into the second Gryphon forward Edward Gale (Keswick, ON) captured his first goal of the night after an assist from Justin Gvora (Thunder Bay, ON). Guelph rookie Marco Franchini (Woodbridge, ON) grabbed the third Gryphon goal when he shot right through UOIT goalie Jason Guy's (Whitby, ON) legs at 2:03 in the second. After this tempers flared on the ice and another fight broke out, this time putting UOIT Josh Vatri (Barrie, ON) in the penalty box for roughing.

Only seconds later Gryphons got their fourth goal on a power play when Patrick Campbell (Sauble Beach, Ont.) sent up the puck to Benjamin Clarke, whose shot deflected off the goalie and into the net.  More penalties followed for both teams, but that didn't stop Jon-Thomas MacDonald (Niagara Falls, ON) from grabbing the fifth goal of the night unassisted. The last goal of the second period for the Gryphons came from rookie Philip Teri (Elora, ON) after a double assist from Ken Peroff (Astorville, ON) and McInerney.

For the third period UOIT pulled their goalie Jason Guy, and put in Jeff Dawson (Bracebridge, ON) hoping that would ward off the Gryphons from adding to their lead. It didn't last long – at 6:34 in the third Peroff scored his second goal of the game after an assist from McInerney. The last goal of the game came at 11:46 when Gale scored his second of the game with assists from Cale Jeffries (Glenboro, MB) and Barrett Brook (Leduc, AB). The final score for the Gryphons was an impressive 8-1, and the final penalty count after the rough and physical game stood at 7 for Gryphon players and 9 for the Ridgebacks.

The next regular season game for the Gryphons is at home in the Gryphon Centre on Oct 27th against the Brock Badgers. The game begins at 7:30pm.
