The York Lions scored three early unanswered goals en route to a 3-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons in men's hockey on Saturday (Jan. 22) at Canlan Ice Sports. Scott VanBommel (Norwich, Ont.) made 27 saves in goal for the Gryphons. Travis Rolheiser (Edmonton) made 35 saves on a busy night in goal for the Lions.
The Gryphons (10-10-2) got the first real scoring opportunities of the game. With Jesse Messier (Keswick, Ont.) in the box for hitting from behind early in the first, the Gryphons went to work on the power play and peppered Rolheiser with several shots, but Rolheiser shut the door, making three big saves in tight to keep the game scoreless.
The Lions (8-15-0) opened the scoring 8:22 into the period with a goal from rookie forward Adam Stuart (Calgary). Stuart broke into the Gryphons' zone on an odd-man rush and waited for VanBommel to open up before sliding the puck through his five-hole and in.
The Lions went up 2-0 late in the period on a power play goal from Messier. Messier waited for traffic to gather in front of the Gryphons' goal before ripping a low shot from the point that beat a screened VanBommel.
The Lions came out firing in the second and were rewarded with their third goal of the game just 2:40 into the period. After sneaking behind the Gryphons' goal, Rob Labute (Toronto) fed a pass out front to an open Jesse Grespan (Toronto) and Grespan fired the puck over VanBommel's outstretched blocker.
The Gryphons replied on the power play when Jon-Thomas MacDonald (Niagara Falls, Ont.) wired a wrist shot past Rolheiser that cut the Lions' lead to 3-1.
