The Guelph Gryphons rallied in the third period Saturday night but fell short in a 3-2 loss to the Windsor Lancers. The Gryphons have fallen into the bad habit of spotting teams a lead and then pouring it on at the end. Such was the case in Windsor when the Lancers took a three goal lead before Guelph responded.
Windsor opened the scoring in the first period on the powerplay on a marker by Brett Vandehogen and another powerplay goal by Steve Ferry on a point shot to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead.
The Lancers scored again in the second period with the eventual game winner by Mike Lombardi. Guelph managed a powerplay goal of their own before the end of the frame by Kris Belan (Florence) on a redirected shot set up by Tim Priamo (Guelph) and Ken Peroff (Astorville).
The third period once again provided some drama as Guelph scored again on the powerplay by Zach Lillie (Bracebridge) set up by Pat Campbell (Sauble Beach) and J.T. Macdonald (Niagara Falls) to make the score 3-2. Despite pulling the goalie and getting some close in opportunities the Gryphons were denied the equalizer. The Gryphons outshot the Lancers 14-11 in the period.
Overall the Gryphons were 2/7 on the powerplay while Windsor was 2/6. The Lancers outshot Guelph 44-37 on the evening.
Jim Watt got the win for the Lancers while Andrew Loverock went the distance for the Gryphons. This was the eighth one goal loss for the Gryphons.
The Gryphons return home for the Frosty Mug game on Fri. Jan. 21 @ the Sleemans Centre when they will host arch rival Laurier Golden Hawks @ 7:30 P.M.
