Guelph’s efforts not enough to beat hot Badger goaltender

The Guelph Gryphon men's hockey team were hoping to capture their third win over the Brock Badgers this season in OUA action at the Gryphon Centre this evening.  Brock goaltender, Kurt Jory had other plans though, standing on his head and giving his visiting team the 1-0 shutout over the Gryphons.

Jory picked up the shutout win on a spectacular performance between the pipes, stopping all 39 shots he faced. The lone, Badger goal was scored by Adam Schwark (Saskatoon, Sask.) in the first period and was assisted by Matt Abercrombie (Sarnia,
Men's Hockey vs. Brock
Ont.) and Kaine Geldart (Kingston, Ont.).

Andrew Loverock (Elmvale, Ont.) was given the nod tonight for the Gryphons and played a solid game for the Gryphons, only allowing one goal on 21 shots.

With the loss the Gryphons drop to 9-8-2, sliding down to 6th in the OUA West standings, while the Badgers' win improves their record to 8-6-6, allowing them to jump up into 5th.

Both teams came out strong in the first period, each getting a number of solid chances to put the first score on the board.  However the Brock Badgers would pot the only goal of the period just five minutes into the frame.  Abercrombie picking up a Brock clearing attempt near center-ice sped into the Gryphon zone and stopped just inside the blue line.  Schwark, trailing into the Guelph end, received a chip-pass from Abercrombie and, drifting to the top of the faceoff circle to the right of Loverock, wired a wrist shot over Loverock's glove and under the crossbar, giving the Badgers the 1-0 lead.

As the period continued from the first goal, the Gryphons picked up the pace and kept the puck circulating in the Badger zone for much of the second half of the period, outshooting the Badgers 14-7 by the end of the period.

The freshly charged Gryphons came out in the second period pressuring in the offensive zone, once again outshooting the Badgers 16-7.  A flurry of scoring chances had Guelph fans on their feet, as the puck had a habit of either trickling through the crease behind the Badger netminder or rolling around, untouched, in front of the Brock net.  Despite their efforts, Jory was strong between the posts for the Badgers and the Gryphons were unable to bury the puck in the second frame, leaving the score 1-0 in favour of the visiting Badgers after forty minutes.

The third period played out much like the second, with the Gryphons getting a number of excellent opportunities to even the score.  The result was also the same as the previous period, as Jory stood on his head and prevented the Gryphons from putting the puck in the net. The lone goal in the first period would be the winner for the Badgers who head home with the 1-0 victory.

Men's Hockey Action
The Gryphons are on the road for their next tilt on Saturday (Jan. 15), where they will look to go undefeated in three games against the Windsor Lancers this season.  The puck will drop at 7:30pm in Windsor.
