In a game that featured plenty of offence and back and forth rushes, the Guelph Gryphons lost a nail-biter to the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers 6-5 in OT on Saturday night at the UNB Fall Classic.

In less than a minute the Panthers struck first on a goal by Jared Gomes. Â Guelph struck back with two goals of their own by Justin Gvora (Thunder Bay) on assists from Ken Peroff (Astorville) and Matt Lyall (Richmond Hill) and rookie Andrew Merrett (Vernon) on assists by Cale Jefferies (Glenboro, MB) and Zach Lillie (Bracebridge). Â Mike MacIsaac of PEI tied the game at two before the end of the first. Guelph outshot PEI 13-10 in the period.
The second period settled offensively with Graham McNabb scoring for the Panthers and Lyall scoring for the Gryphons with assists from Gvora and Alex Magera (Edmonton, AB). Â The Gryphons dominated with shots in the period outshooting the Panthers 12-5.

It was off to the races again in the third with each team scoring twice more. Â The Panthers had goals from Chad Locke and Matt Carter and the Gryphons replied with goals from Ed Gale (Keswick) on passes from Tim Priamo (Guelph) and J.T. Macdonald (Niagara Falls) and Mark Pawlowski (Mississauga) getting the second goal of the period on a seeing eye slapshot from the point.
This set the table for overtime and Graham McNabb was the hero on a rebound goal halfway through the overtime session. Â Guelph outshot PEI 37-29 and Andrew Loverock went the distance for Guelph while Mark Guggenberger went all the way for PEI.
The Gryphons are on the road again this week when they travel to play the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Sun. Oct. 3 in South Bend, Ind. Â Game time is 5 P.M.
