Men's Hockey drop exhibition game to UNB

The Guelph Gryphons lost a chippy game tonight 4-2 with the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds in Fredericton.

While the game featured some fast paced rushes, there were times when the up and coming Gryphons battled during and after the play with the veteran Red Shirts.  UNB opened the scoring in the first three minutes on a goal by Luke Gallant and the Gryphons responded with two of their own both on the powerplay.  Nathan Martine (Port Colborne) scored on a screened shot from the point on a setup by Justin Gvora (Thunder Bay) and Matt Lyall (Richmond Hill).  Lyall scored one of his own on a laser form the left side on passes from J.T. Macdonald (Niagara Falls) and Gvora.

UNB grabbed the lead in the second period on goals by Matt Fillier, Kyle Bailey, and Jon Harty.

The third period featured plenty of powerplays for the Gryphons but they could not capitalize.

Cody St. Jacques (Iroquois Falls) was outstanding in nets for the Gryphons as they killed off all seven of the UNB powerplays and Guelph went 2/9 on their powerplays.

The Gryphons return to action on Sat. Sept. 25 when they play the UPEI Panthers @ 4 P.M. Atlantic @ the Aitken Centre in Fredericton.
