Nov. 27: McGill 5 – Guelph 4 - OT
MONTREAL - The Guelph Gryphons put a real scare in the McGill Redmen Saturday night as they battled in a 5-4 OT loss in Montreal. The Gryphons have played some outstanding hockey in the first half of the season to date and Saturday's game was no exception running their record to 8-5-1-1. Both teams played high tempo hockey and there were plenty of hits.
McGill opened the scoring early in the first off a face-off on a goal by Pat Belzile. Thomas Kiriakou (Richmond Hill) evened the score on assists from Nathan Martine (Port Colborne) and defence partner Tim Priamo (Guelph). Before the period ended league leading goal scorer Francis Verreault-Paul scored his 21st. of the season on the powerplay. Guelph outshot McGill 7-6 in the period.
McGill would add to their lead on another powerplay goal by Hubert Genest on a seeing eye point shot early in the second giving McGill a 3-1 lead. However, the Gryphons responded before the end of the period on a one-timer by Cale Jefferies (Embro, Mb.) on a smart goal mouth pass from Ed Gale (Keswick).
Early in the third period Genest scored his second of the game to restore McGill's two goal lead to 4-2. The never say die Gryphons countered with two of their own by Jefferies with his second of the game assisted by Andrew Merrett (Vernon) and a powerplay goal by Matt Lyall (Richmond Hill) set up by Ken Peroff (Astorville) and J.T. Macdonald (Niagara Falls). Both teams had chances right to the end of the game but nothing was settled in regulation.
In the overtime session Evan Vossen scored on a screened shot shortly after the Gryphons had killed off a penalty. The shots on goal for the game favoured Guelph 27-26. Andrew Loverock went all the way for Guelph while veteran Hubert Morin played for the Redmen. Guelph was 1/6 on the powerplay while McGill went 2/9.
The Gryphons continue their five game road trip on Fri. Dec. 3 when they play their fierce rivals Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks.
