Gryphons Lose Battle Versus Brock

  Nov. 20: Guelph 1 - Brock 3 (13-25, 23-25, 25-21, 23-25)

GUELPH - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team dropped a tough battle at home this afternoon losing 3-1 to the Brock Badgers.

The story of the entire match was Brock's stellar defence outplaying the Gryphon offence. Time and again Brock was able to control the first contact and transition to offence while Guelph could not match them dig for dig. The first set was side out volleyball until the first technical time out, but after that Brock defended well and made the Gryphons pay winning 25-13. Set two was close throughout with neither team leading by more than three points, but Brock's better execution at the end secured a 25-23 win. In the third set, Guelph built a four point advantage early only to have Brock close the gap. The Gryphons battled again to take a four point advantage later in the set and held on to win 25-21. Brock began set four leading 16-12 at the second technical time out and looked to be in control at 22-26, but Guelph rallied late to close the gap to a single point at 24-23. One last Brock kill on another digging error from Guelph sealed the match at 25-23.

"The synopsis of this match was pretty simple. Brock played defence and we didn't and that's why we lost. Considering we trained all week to be better defensively, this was extremely disappointing for us," stated Coach Funk.

Kylen Van Osch led the Gryphon offence with 21 points (18 kills, 3 blocks) followed by Brooke Lloyd with 14 (11 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks) and Erinn Bickle with 13 (10 kills, 3 blocks).

Guelph will wrap up their first half schedule at home next Saturday at 6pm against the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
