The Guelph Gryphon women's hockey team defeated the Queens Gaels 5-2 this afternoon at the Gryphon Centre.

The game would be a rematch from their last encounter, where the Gryphons fell to the Gaels 2-1 in October. The Gryphons would start slow, but would continue to build momentum throughout the game.

Guelph's Samantha Ryder (North Vancouver, BC) would score for the first time this season with not one, but two goals. Other Guelph goal-scorers include Erin Small (Pickering, Ont.), Tamara Bell (Guelph, Ont.) and Tayne Hewer (Barrie, Ont.). Also, Dayna Kanis (Georgetown, Ont.) would provide three assists and Victoria Woods (Orangeville, Ont.) would assist in two goals.

Queen's Kelsey Thomson (Martintown, Ont.) and Michelle Hunt (Mississauga, Ont.) would score goals for the Gaels.

The first period started off on the slow-side for the Gryphons, and while making shots on net their defense would fail to keep up with the Gaels; who took advantage of this. In a scramble in front of the net, Queen's left-wing Kelsey Thomson was able to score a goal with assists from sisters, Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) and Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.).

Despite a weak defense, Guelph's offense would work hard to get shots on net and both teams would send the puck back and forth for the rest of the first period.

As the second period got underway, the Gryphons tied up the score with a power play goal from Erin Small at just three minutes in, with assists from Dayna Kanis and Jacalyn Sollis (West Vancouver, Ont.). The Gryphon offence would succeed to score again, as Katie Mora would make a pass to Jessica Zerafa who would round the back of the Gael's net, pass to Tamara Bell who would shoot the puck in the left pocket of the net for a goal.

Their lead would be short-lived as Queens defenceman Michelle Hunt would even up the score to 2-2, with assists from Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, AB) and Emily Harrison (Calgary, AB).

Samantha Ryder would end the tie with a goal, and assists from Dayna Kanis (Georgetown, Ont.) and Victoria Woods (Orangeville, Ont.). The end of the second period would see the Gryphon offence and defense in full-action, and a lead of 3-2 over Queens.

The Gryphons would be at full-throttle in the third period, and prevent Queens from scoring in their two power play opportunities. Samantha Ryder would net her second goal of the game with assists from Kimberley Wong (Mississauga, Ont.) and Dayna Kanis.

With just 15 seconds left in the third period, Tayne Hewer would score the fifth goal for Guelph with assists from Erin Small and Victoria Woods.

The Gryphons would walk away with their fifth consecutive win.

The next game for the Gryphons will be at the Gryphon centre on November 18
th against the Brock Badgers at 7:30pm.
