Gryphons Edged 5-4 at Western

The Guelph Gryphons and Western Mustangs continued their series of close see-saw battles Friday in London, with Western prevailing 5-4.  It was a game of special teams with each side going 3/6 on the powerplay and the outcome not being decided until late in the game.

The first period produced only one goal each with Steve Reece scoring on the powerplay for Western and Tim Priamo (Guelph) replying with assists from Nathan Martine (Port Colborne) and Thomas Kiriakou (Richmond Hill) on the powerplay as well.

The second period featured two goals by each side when Keaton Turkiewicz scored on a Western powerplay followed by Priamo's second goal of the game on the powerplay assisted again by Martine and Kiriakou.  Guelph took the lead at 3-2 on another powerplay right off a face-off by Kris Belan (Florence) set up by Kiriakou three seconds from the draw. Western evened the score less than a minute later when Turkiewicz scored his second of the game.  The teams ended the period at 3-3.

The back and forth affair continued in the third until Kevin Baker scored on the powerplay and Aaron Snow added the eventual winner.  Guelph replied with one of their own by Martine set up by Matt Lyall (Richmond Hill) and Ed Gale (Keswick).

Final shots favoured Western 37-30 and Andrew Loverock (Elmvale) went the distance in nets for Guelph while Anthony Grieco went all the way for Western.

Next action for the Gryphons is Sat. at 3 P.M. when they host the Brock Badgers in the Hockey Day in Gryphonville.  This day will also feature an Alumni game for former Gryphons at 1 P.M. and an evening banquet to honour the Aggies and Gryphons teams of the '60s.
