The Guelph Gryphons put on their hard hats and went to work last night grinding out a 3-2 win over the host Brock Badgers.
The Gryphons evened their regular season record at 1-1-0 and relied on their powerplay to push them to victory.
Thomas Kiriakou (Richmond Hill) scored the only goal of the first period on the powerplay with assists from Kris Belan (Florence) and Ed Gale (Keswick). Guelph outshot Brock 11-8 in the period.
Brock evened the score in the second period on a powerplay of their own by Kaine Geldart.
In the third Guelph scored again on the powerplay with a marker from Belan and assisted by Kiriakou. Justin Gvora (Thunder Bay) scored what turned out to be the winning goal on a quick wrist shot after winning a loose puck battle in the Brock zone to put Guelph up 3-1. But Kris Schmidt of Brock scored with a few minutes to go to make it close. Guelph outshot Brock 26-23 on the evening and went 2/6 on the powerplay while Brock went 1/7.
Cody St. Jacques went the distance for the Gryphons in getting the win while Kurt Jory of Brock took the loss.
Next action for the Gryphons is back on the road on Fri. Oct. 15 @ 7:30 against the arch-rival Waterloo Warriors.
