Oct. 29: Guelph 32 – Waterloo 0 (25-8, 25-18, 25-21)
GUELPH - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team came away with a 3-0 victory over Waterloo in their home opener tonight at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre. Set scores were (25-8, 25-18, 25-21).
Guelph came out strong in the first set and had their job made easier by some Waterloo errors in taking the set 25-8. After jumping out to an 8-5 lead in the second set, Waterloo settled down and started to side-out to keep the set much closer as the teams battled back and forth. A late Gryphons surge opened up a bigger lead and Guelph ended up winning 25-18. Waterloo led the third set 16-15 at the technical time-out and the teams traded side-outs until 20-20 before the Gryphons again surged ahead late to win 25-21.
"We felt fairly fortunate to get the result we got tonight as Waterloo was the better passing team through most of the match. But our blocking and offense came through when we needed it in a match that was close after the first set," said Gryphon head coach Paul Funk.
Kylen Van Osch led the Gryphons' offense with 14 points (9 kills, 2 aces, 3 blocks) followed by Brooke Lloyd with 11 (8 kills, 3 blocks).
Guelph's home weekend continues tomorrow at 6pm against the Laurier Golden Hawks.
