The Guelph Gryphon women's volleyball team opened the season with a win after defeating the Western Mustangs 3-1 in London on Friday night. Set scores were (25-22, 17-25, 25-16, 25-19).
The match opened with Western jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead but after an early time out, Guelph bounced back to lead 8-7 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. Western closed the gap late to tie the set at 22, but the Gryphons rallied to win 25-22.
In set two, Western opened up a sizable lead in the middle of the set and cruised to a 25-17 win evening the match at a set apiece. However, Guelph was able to re-group in the third set and opened up a big lead of their own in the middle of the set and won 25-16.
The fourth set was close early but the Gryphons led 16-12 at the technical timeout and maintained the lead before sealing the match win with a 25-19 score.
Coach Funk said ,"We had a great team effort tonight. We had great balance on offense and our passing was very solid for the majority of the match. We will need to continue on the same track tomorrow in Windsor."
The Guelph offence was led by Claire Sandor and Kylen Van Osch (12 kills, 3 aces, 2 blocks) with 17 points each followed by Brooke Lloyd (14 kills, 2 blocks) with 16 and Erinn Bickle (5 kills, 4 aces, 5 blocks) with 14. Megan Canavan had 28 digs to anchor the defence.
The Gryphons road weekend continues tomorrow at 6pm in Windsor versus the Lancers.
