The Gryphon men's hockey team dropped their first game of a weekend doubleheader in Thunder Bay this weekend against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
On most nights when the Guelph Gryphons pound over 40 shots on the opposition they come away with a win. Â Not so Saturday night when Alex Dupuis turned away 40 of 41 for a 5-1 Lakehead win. Â While the Gryphons trailed after the first period 2-0 on goals by Jordan Smith and Andy Hyvarinen, the Gryphons outshot the Thunderwolves 11-9 and kept pace with the Wolves.
Â
The Gryphons pulled to within one early in the second period on the powerplay on a point shot by Tim Priamo (Guelph) assisted by Nathan Martine (Port Colborne) and hometown local Justin Gvora. Â But the Thunderwolves made the most of their chances in the period and added goals by Kris Hogg, Adam Sergerie, and a late marker by Pierre-Marc Guilbault. Â Guelph again outshot Lakehead 12-10 in the period.
Â
A very determined Gryphon squad worked and created numerous chances in the third period and despite outshooting Lakehead 18-2 could not finish on a hot goaltender.
Â
The Gryphons went 1/4 on the powerplay and held Lakehead at 0/2 on their manpower advantages. Â Cody St. Jacques started in nets for Guelph and was relieved by Andrew Loverock after the second period.
Â
The Gryphons are back at it tonight in Thunder Bay @ 7:30 P.M. for a rematch against the Thunderwolves.
