After a game of many chances for both sides, the Guelph Gryphons were able to hold off the Western Mustangs taking the game 4-2. Tayne Hewer (Barrie, Ont.) would score the game-winner in the second while Dayna Kanis (Georgetown, Ont.) added the insurance late in the third. The Gryphons move to 5-2-2 on the season, the loss dropping the Mustangs to 3-5-1.
Danielle Skoufranis (Thornhill, Ont.) got the start for the Gryphons tonight and put on a great performance stopping 21 of 23 shots to pick up the win.
Erin Small (Pickering, Ont.) was a major offensive factor for Guelph setting up the Gryphons' first two goals and therefore picking up 2 assists on the night. Jessica Zerafa (Mississauga, Ont.) and Rose Harris (Colborne, Ont.), who also picked up an assist, were the Gryphons to put away the first two goals.
Guelph dominated the first period putting up two scores to take the lead 2-0 after one.
The first goal came after Guelph had just finished killing a penalty. Erin Small fed the puck to a floating Jessica Zerafa on the Western blue line. Zerafa walked in alone, threw a couple of moves on the goalie and catching her lying down, tucked the puck around her pad and in.
Small created the opportunity on the second goal when she came streaking down the side of the ice and sent the puck over to Rose Harris who was coming down with her in the middle. Harris pulled the puck back and around the Western defender with the toe of her stick and roofed one on the Mustang goaltender.
The second period looked much like the first but with the roles reversed. Western came out strong and on a giveaway in the Gryphon end, the Mustangs were able to set up a cross-net pass that caught Skoufranis out of position and resulted in a goal.
The Mustangs would later tie the game at two when an awkward shot squeaked under the shaft of Skoufranis' stick.
The Gryphons didn't give up though, coming back to score one in the last minute of the period to take back the lead. After the puck was fired on goal, a sea of red, white, and gold swarmed the net and with a number of Gryphons getting chances to jam at it, eventually Tayne Hewer buried the puck in the back of the net giving the Gryphons the 3-2 advantage.
The Gryphons would get an insurance marker in the third on a Dayna Kanis goal, putting the Gryphons at ease and sending the Western Mustangs packing.
The Gryphons are on the road in Kitchener-Waterloo next weekend to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks (Nov. 21) and the Waterloo Warriors (Nov. 22). Go Gryphons!
