Name: Chelsey Mathieu
Position: Student Manager of the Gryphon Field House
What are you responsible for in your position?
As the student manager in the Field House, I am responsible for assisting the facility supervisor in day-to-day operations and management of the facility. This includes the training, managing, and coordinating of all Field House staff to ensure they can successfully perform their duties, ensure that the scheduling of programs is adhered to and operates at a high standard from a facilities perspective, manage private rentals and events, providing customer service, communicating with staff and assigning shift tasks, and ensuring that the building is safe for active use.
Why do you love working for the UofG, Department of Athletics?
I enjoy working here because I get the opportunity to interact with a number of different people and user groups each day, I get to share my passion for athletics with those around me, and be a part of some great events. I love being able to build relationships with different users and user groups, and with staff as well.
What was your proudest moment in this job?
Some of the moments that make me most proud are when other staff members are able to succeed. I think it's extremely important that they have the opportunity to have an impact here and develop transferable skills that will take them well beyond their student jobs. A particularly proud moment personal triumph would probably be successfully navigating the busy month of September. September is always filled with a number of events and is an exciting time, especially in the Field House, as we transform into more than just a sports facility; We host a number of orientation week events and the entire month feels pretty much non-stop. As a student, there's definitely a different view of many of the events - you don't get to see or appreciate any of the "behind the scenes" work and planning that gets put into a number of these events. It was exciting to be on the other side of all of them, and to able to successfully manage the operations of the events.
What have you learned from this job?
Though I have only worked here for a short period of time, I have learned a number of different things that range from using tools to stringing nets, managing staff to building schedules, field maintenance to conflict resolution, and event management. I have arguably learned more in my time at the Field House than I have at many of the other jobs I have held up to this point.
If you could give advice to students looking for a campus job what would it be?
My advice to students looking for a position on campus would be: Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. If you don't apply for the job, you'll never have a chance at getting it. It's important to gain the experience of having a job during school because you can acquire skills that you might not learn in other places or at later times in your life (i.e., the time management and planning of balancing school, work, and social responsibilities is something valuable that might come too late if you don't take the chance to learn it during your time here). Finally, having a job on campus gives you the opportunity to connect and build relationships, not only with coworkers but with those whom you interact with during your shifts. There are some things that you can't learn from books in a classroom!
