GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2026-27 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by POWERADE' series.
Adelaide Holmes (women's rugby) and
Daniel Meron (baseball) have been named 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' for the period covering August 31 to September 6, 2026.
Addy Holmes (Women's Rugby)
Addy Holmes (Waterloo, ON) is this week's 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' after kickstarting the women's rugby team in their opening game of the season. Holmes, the fourth-year winger put her stamp on her team's season opening 40-7 victory over the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 5) from St. Catharines. The criminal justice and public policy major with her team trailing 7-0 early, got her team on the board in grand style as she received a kick and returned it back for 60m, eluding several Badger would-be tacklers for her team's first try of the new season. Holmes would record her team's next try as she was in support, receiving the pitch from her teammate who made the long run and scoring to give her team the lead to ensure the win for the Gryphons. Holmes and rest of the women's rugby team will return to Varsity Field for their home opener against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday night (Sept. 11) with kickoff scheduled for 7pm.
Daniel Meron (Baseball)
This week's 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' is
Daniel Meron of the Gryphons baseball team. Meron, a criminal justice and public policy major from Thornhill, ON had a phenomenal performance on mound in his team's 3-0 home win on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 6) against the Laurier Golden Hawks. Meron went the distance for the complete game shutout, going 7 innings and allowing only 2 hits and striking out 4 in the win, helping lead his Gryphons to a 3-1 start to open their season. Meron and the rest of the Guelph Gryphons baseball team will head on the road for a pair of doubleheaders when they take on the Windsor Lancers on Saturday (Sept. 12) before making the trip to Welland to take on the Brock Badgers on Sunday (Sept. 13).
