TORONTO, Ont. – The Gryphons badminton team over the weekend (Mar. 6-8) competed at the 2026 OUA Badminton Championships. The Athletic Centre on the campus of the University of Toronto hosted the three-day championship tournament as the Gryphons finished in 9th after going 0-4 in pool play.
Each of the nine participating schools competing at the championships were split into one of two pools, with Pool A being comprised of four teams and Pool B holding five teams. The Gryphons ended up in Pool B and would take on the Waterloo Warriors, Ottawa Gee-Gees, York Lions and Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. In each matchup teams played a total of 10 games, a pair of both men's and women's solo matches, a pair of both men's and women's doubles matches, and a pair of mixed doubles matches.

The Gryphons opened up their tournament against the York Lions as the fell in their opening match 9-1. Guelph took on the Ottawa Gee-Gees in their second match of the day on Friday (Mar. 6) as they dropped to 0-2 in pool play after falling 8-2 with a point differential of 411-327. The Gryphons closed out their day against Ontario Tech in their third Pool B match as the Ridgebacks came away with the 7-3 win, outscoring the Gryphs 421-308. On Saturday (Mar. 7) in their final match in pool play, the U of G badminton team suffered a 10-0 loss to Waterloo.
Following the conclusion of pool play the Gryphons placed last in Pool B with an 0-4 record, meaning they would take on the TMU Bold with the winner earning the right to play Ontario Tech in the 7th-place match. In the consolation semifinal, the Gryphons saw their OUA Championship come to an end in a 6-1 defeat to the Bold and finished the tournament in 9th-place.
The Toronto Varsity Blues at the conclusion of the tournament were crowned OUA champions marking their third consecutive OUA banner and their ninth championship in the last ten years. Head to www.oua.ca for more information.
