TORONTO, Ont. – The Gryphons badminton made their way down to the Tait McKenzie Centre at the campus of York University for the 2025 OUA Badminton Championships over the past weekend (Feb. 7-9). After three days of action and five total matches the Gryphons finished in 9th after going 0-4 in pool play.
Each of the nine participating schools competing at the championships were split into one of two pools, with Pool A being comprised of four teams and Pool B holding five teams. The Gryphons ended up in Pool B and would take on the Waterloo Warriors, Ottawa Gee-Gees, TMU Bold and the hosts, the York Lions. In each matchup teams played a total of 10 games, a pair of both men's and women's solo matches, a pair of both men's and women's doubles matches, and a pair of mixed doubles matches.

The Gryphons opened up the tournament in tough against the host Lions and fell 10-0 in their opening match. In their second match of the afternoon on Friday (Feb. 7), Guelph took on the Ottawa Gee-Gees as they dropped to 0-2 in pool play after suffering a 10-0 loss with a point differential of 420-213. On Saturday (Feb. 8), the Gryphons took on the TMU Bold in their third match of pool play as the Bold came away with a 10-0 win, outscoring the Gryphs 439-239. The schedule did not get any easier for the U of G badminton team in their final pool play match with the Waterloo Warriors defeating the Gryphons 10-0.
Following the conclusion of pool play the Gryphons placed last in Pool B with an 0-4 record, meaning they would take on the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks with the winner earning the right to play the TMU in the 7th-place match. In the consolation semifinal, the Gryphons saw their OUA Championship come to an end in a 6-2 defeat to the Ridgebacks and finished the tournament in 9th-place.
The Toronto Varsity Blues at the conclusion of the tournament were crowned OUA champions marking their second consecutive OUA banner and their eighth championship in the last nine years.
