GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2025-26 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by POWERADE' series.
Rebecca Parker (women's track and field) and
Olivier Ciarlo (men's hockey) have been named 'Gryphon Athletes of the Week' for the period covering February 16 to 22, 2026.
Rebecca Parker (Women's Track and Field)
For the second time this season,
Rebecca Parker has been named 'Gryphon Athlete of Week' after an all-world showing at the 2026 OUA Track and Field Championships over the weekend. The Gryphons track and field team was in Toronto for the 2026 OUA Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 20-21) where Parker competed in the women's pentathlon and long jump where she came in 1st-place in both events, earning double gold. The fifth-year criminal justice and public policy major in the women's pentathlon broke her own OUA record she set at last year's provincial championships, setting a new benchmark score of 4234 points. Parker also broke the women's pentathlon record in the 60m hurdles (8.39s) and long jump (6.03m) in her gold medal winning performance. That wasn't the only gold medal the Windsor native would claim as she finished in 1st-place in the women's long jump with a jump of 6.10m in her 5th jump of the competition.
Rebecca Parker's double gold medal winning performance earned her the Dr. Wendy Jerome Trophy as the most valuable performer of the meet. The Gryphons would sweep both the men's and women's team titles at the meet. Parker and the rest of the Gryphon track and field team are off this week before heading to Winnipeg for the 2026 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships from March 5 to 7.
Olivier Ciarlo (Men's Hockey)
A phenomenal performance in goal for the Gryphons men's hockey team sees
Olivier Ciarlo earn 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' honours for the second time this season. The Gryphons faced off against the Laurier Golden Hawks in the opening round of the Queen's Cup playoffs where Ciarlo helped backstop his side to a pair of road wins in Game 1 and the decisive Game 3 to send his team onto the OUA Quarterfinals. In Game 1 on Wednesday (Feb. 18), the Laval, Quebec native wasn't busy in the opening two periods but came up big in the final period, stopping all 12 shots he saw including a couple of huge saves late to preserve the 2-1 win on the road. Following the loss in Game 2, the Gryphons returned to the ice the following night (Feb. 22) for Game 3 at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex where the first-year goalie delivered his finest performance of the series. Ciarlo bounced back in a big way, turning aside all 30 shots he saw to earn his first career OUA shutout to send his team to the quarterfinals in their 4-0 Game 3 victory and the 2-1 series win over Laurier. The arts major was fantastic in the best-of-three series, stopping 76 of his 81 shots he faced over the course of the three games for a 1.68 GAA and a .938 save percentage. Ciarlo and the rest of the men's hockey team will now take on the Windsor Lancers in the quarterfinals with the best-of-three series kicking off on Wednesday night (Feb. 25) from Windsor.
