Katherine Heard (Gryphons Women's Hockey) Named OUA Athlete of the Week

BURLINGTON, Ont. – A University of Guelph student-athlete for the sixth time this season has been named 'OUA Athlete of the Week.' Katherine Heard of the Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team has earned conference-wide honours alongside Kyana-Jade Poulin (Carleton women's basketball) as this week's 'OUA Athlete of the Week' for the week of January 19 to 25, 2026. Heard, a sociology major at the University of Guelph, scored twice over the weekend in her team's wins over the TMU Bold and Queen's Gaels to extend her impressive goal scoring streak to four games.

Katherine Heard has been named 'OUA Athlete of the Week' as she continues her red hot month of January. Heard, a fifth-year forward and captain of the Gryphons women's hockey team, was integral in her team's road wins over the weekend. On Friday night (Jan. 23) with the game still scoreless against TMU in overtime, it would be the Captain Katherine Heard who would come through for the Gryphons as she took the pass from Avery Robinson and scored the game winning goal to lead her side to a 1-0 road win over the Bold. A quick turnaround for the team saw them back on the ice on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 24) in Kingston against the then No. 8-ranked Queen's Gaels, and Heard would once again deliver for the Gryphons. In the 2nd period, the Arva, Ontario native started the Gryphs on the rush as the rebound fell on to her stick as she buried it to extend her goal scoring streak to four games to give her side a 2-0 lead. Heard also picked up an assist in her team's 4-1 victory over the Gaels, setting up Maeve Sutherland-Case's second goal in the contest. Heard has been on a tear in the month of January, scoring in four straight games and has six points in the month, vaulting her to 6th in the conference with 18 points on the season. The sociology major is also tied for 3rd in the OUA with 12 assists. Next up for Heard and the rest of the No. 6-ranked Gryphons women's hockey team, a pair of home games at the Gryphon Centre when they host the No. 8-ranked Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday night (Jan. 28) and the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday night (Jan. 31).
