WHKY RECAP: No. 6-ranked Gryphons win, 4-3, over No. 8-ranked Waterloo Warriors

GUELPH, Ont. – The No. 6-ranked Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team picked up an impressive victory on home ice on Wednesday night (Jan. 28) in a U SPORTS Top 10 matchup, with Guelph skating to a 4-3 win over the No. 8-ranked Waterloo Warriors at the Gryphon Centre Arena. The Gryphons used a three-goal, 2nd period, to take a 4-1 lead. The Warriors battled back late, with a pair of 3rd period goals, to trim the deficit to one, but the Gryphons held on from there, to pick up another important three points in the OUA West Division standings. With the win, Guelph improves to 16-2-3 on the season, while the Waterloo Warriors fall to 13-8-1.

With the game tied at 1-1 after the opening 20 minutes, the Gryphons took control of the game in the middle frame. Just :33 seconds into the 2nd period, Maeve Sutherland-Case would fire a shot off the crossbar and in to give the Gryphons a 2-1 lead. For Sutherland-Case, a fourth-year forward from Hamilton, it was her third goal in her last two games, and her team-leading 10th goal of the season. Just over three minutes later, Guelph would extend their lead to 3-1, as fifth-year blueliner, Teghan MacRae (Cookstown, ON), would fire home her 1st goal of the season, beating Waterloo goalie Lauryn Busseri glove-side to give the Gryphons a two-goal lead. Gryphons second-year forward, Michelle Gao, would cap off the scoring in the 2nd period, taking the feed from Alexie Olivier and scoring her 4th of the season to put Guelph up 4-1. The Warriors would pull their goalie for an extra skater in the 3rd, with Waterloo fifth-year forward, Tatum James, scoring twice in the span of 2:20 to make it a 4-3 game with just over two minutes to play in regulation. But Guelph would hold on from there, with Gryphons goalie Sophie Helfenstein turning away 24 of the 27 shots sent her way on the night for the win.
