MVB RECAP: Gryphons Holds On Late to Split Weekend Doubleheader Against York

TORONTO, Ont. – The Gryphons men's volleyball team returned to the court over the weekend in Toronto when they took on the York Lions as they hung on to earn a hard-fought split.
 

Saturday, Jan. 24, 2025 | Slow Start Does In Gryphons in Four Set Defeat
 
After a week off, the Gryphons were back in action on Saturday afternoon at the Tait McKenzie Centre where they dropped the first match in four sets with set scores of 21-25, 15-25, 25-22, 22-25. Guelph started the find their game in the third set after dropping the opening two sets. With York leading 19-18, outside hitter Killian Donovan would start the run, racking up three straight points as the Gryphs took the next four points helping them extend the match. However in the 4th set, the Lions would run off five straight points to lead 21-15 to lead them to the win. Attacking errors hurt the Gryphs in the loss as they committed 28 on the afternoon to the Lions 15 and York was hitting at a .282% clip in the match. Second-year Sydney, Australia Killian Donovan led all players with a game high 18.5 points and 15 kills.
 

Sunday, Jan. 25, 2025 | Gryphons Hang On Late to Split Doubleheader
 
On Sunday afternoon, the Gryphons avoided the reverse sweep as they hung on for the five set (27-25, 25-22, 24-26, 16-25, 15-13) victory to split the weekend doubleheader. Guelph got off to a better start as they won two tightly contested sets to take a 2-0 lead. With the Gryphs trailing 23-19 in the third, they run off five straight points to set up match point but York called timeout and would win the next three points to take the set and extend the match. After the Lions won the fourth set to send it to the deciding set, Matthew McCarthy and Braeden Sears led the charge coming up with two kills each to give their side the 11-8 lead following the 6-1 run as Guelph would escape York with a split in the doubleheader. Four Gryphons finished with double-digit points led by Killian Donovan's 19 points and match-high 17 kills while Finn Hughes also had a big match finishing with 16 points and 13 kills.
 
The Gryphons (8-6) are back home at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre this weekend when they host the TMU Bold on January 30 and 31.
