GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2025-26 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by POWERADE' series.
Alexandra McDougall (women's cross country) and Will MacLeod (men's lacrosse) have been named 'Gryphon Athletes of the Week' for the period covering September 15 to 21, 2025.
Alexandra McDougall (Women's Cross Country)
Alexandra McDougall is your 'Athlete of the Week' following her impressive showing at the Vigars and Salter Western Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 20). The Port Perry, Ontario native is a fourth-year runner on the Gryphons cross country team as they competed in their first event of the 2025 season. The biomedical engineering major in London over the weekend was the first racer to cross the line in a field of 100 runners in the women's 8km race with a time of 28:48.8 for her first individual win. McDougall helped her side to a 4th-place finish in the team standings. McDougall and the rest of the Gryphons women's cross country team will look to build off their opening event as they head to the University of Waterloo for the Don Mills Open on Saturday (Sept. 27).
Will MacLeod (Men's Lacrosse)
An offensive outburst from Will MacLeod of the Gryphons men's lacrosse team sees him earn this week's 'Athlete of the Week' honours.
MacLeod in his first season with the team as a transfer from Robert Morris (NCAA) and was instrumental in his team's wins over Brock and Toronto scoring 9 goals and tallying 12 points over the weekend. On Saturday (Sept. 20), the history major scored 3 goals and had 2 assists in his team's 16-4 road win over the Brock Badgers. The Stoney Creek, Ontario native one-upped himself the following day (Sept. 21) in the team's home opener where he scored 6 times for a double hat trick and had a 7-point day as the Gryphs defeated the Varsity Blues 24-10. MacLeod leads CUFLA (Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association) with 17 goals and 5 hat tricks and is 2nd with 31 points helping lead his team to a 4-1 record. MacLeod and the men's lacrosse team are off until Tuesday, September 30 when they host the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks from the Gryphon Soccer Complex at 7pm.
