2025 Season Preview: Gryphons Cross Country

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's and women's cross country teams are set for the 2025 season, starting with the Vigars and Salter Western Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 20). The event marks the first of five scheduled events that make up the 2025 season which wraps up at the U SPORTS Cross Country Championships in Sherbrooke, Quebec on Saturday, November 8. A total of 34 student-athletes (19 men and 15 women) will represent the Gryphons cross country program this upcoming season.

Following their silver medal finish last season, the Gryphons men's cross country team will look to get back to the top of the podium and add on to their provincial-leading 30 OUA banners in team history. The women will aim to make a return to the podium after finishing in 5th-place at last season's OUA Cross Country Championships. Both teams will also look to make it onto the national podium, with the Gryphon men coming in 4th and the women in 9th-place in the overall team standings at the 2024 U SPORTS Cross Country Championships a season ago. The 2025 OUA Cross Country Championships will be hosted by the Queen's Gaels in Kingston on October 25. The cross country format remains the same as in recent years at both the OUA and U SPORTS championships, with both men and women competing in 8km races, with team standings determined by the top five finishers (seven runners per school, top five count towards scoring).

Men's Cross Country

"Our men's team in 2025 is led by a solid core of returning athletes," says Gryphons cross country head coach, Kyle Boorsma, who enters his first season in charge of the Gryphons cross country program. "As a whole, this group is super focused on bringing back a title and are determined to make that a reality." A total of 19 athletes are on the 2025 Gryphons men's cross country roster, including the return of six individuals who helped Guelph capture OUA silver a season ago. Helping lead the way for the Gryphons in 2025 is the trio of Max Davies, Jack Lehto and Christian Rachner. The Burlington native earned U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian status after crossing the line in 11th-place at nationals last year.
