GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's basketball team won all three games at the Wesmen Classic to capture the championship in an eight-team field in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Wesmen Classic exhibition tournament took place from December 28-30 on the campus of the University of Winnipeg at the Duckworth Centre, with eight schools from five provinces in a bracket style tournament.
The Gryphons opened play on Saturday (Dec. 28) against the Mount Royal Cougars where they came through with a 60-50 win in the quarterfinal, led by
Renee Armstrong and
Hannah Bourdon who each had 11 points and 8 rebounds. Guelph advanced to the semifinals to take on the hosts, the Winnipeg Wesmen, on Sunday (Dec. 29) as
Lucy Tesseyman stepped up to the line with :43 seconds left and made both free throws to give her team the 67-66 lead as they defeated the hosts 69-66 to advance to the finals. A strong 4th quarter performance from the Gryphons in the championship game on Monday (Dec. 30), propelled them to a 62-45 win over the Regina Cougars, outscoring Regina 15-7 in the 4th quarter. Renee Armstong's game-high 27 points and eight rebounds led the Gryphs in the win, while
Lucy Tesseyman pitched in with a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double.
The No. 9-ranked Gryphons (8-3) return to OUA action on Wednesday night (January 8, 2025) when they take the floor at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre to battle the McMaster Marauders (7-4).
