GUELPH, Ont. – In front of a Frosty Mug record-tying crowd of 4,942 fans at the Sleeman Centre, the Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team saw their dramatic third-period comeback attempt fall just short, with the York Lions escaping Guelph with a 4-3 win in the 15th edition of The Frosty Mug, presented by Indi Mortgage.
The sold-out crowd in Guelph was silenced through the first 40 minutes of play, with the visiting York Lions jumping out to a 4-0 lead through the first two periods of play. But the Frosty Mug crowd would come alive in the final frame, with assistant captain,
Nathan Allensen, scoring just :48 seconds into the 3rd period to put Guelph on the board, trailing 4-1. A few minutes later, Guelph would strike again, this time with third-year forward
Giordano Biondi (Sudbury, ON) scoring at the 4:00 minute mark to make it a 4-2 game. Less than two minutes later, the Gryphons would find the back of the net for a third time, when Nolan DeGurse's beautiful cross-ice pass would set up
Griffin Wilson to make it a 4-3 game, sending the capacity crowd at The Sleeman Centre into a frenzy. It would be as close as the Gryphons would come to finding the equalizer the rest of the way, however, with Guelph's late comeback attempt ultimately falling just short. The Gryphons would come agonizingly close to finding the tying goal, with
Nolan Dann's shot late in the 3rd period whistling just wide of the York post as the Lions would hold on to spoil the Gryphons annual Frosty Mug game. With the win, the Lions improve to 5-12-4, while the Gryphons fall to 11-10-0 on the season.
The Gryphons will return to the ice on Saturday night (Jan. 25) for a home matchup at the Gryphon Centre against the Carleton Ravens (11-8-1). Puck drop is set for 7:30pm and can be seen live online at
