GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2024-25 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by Core Power' series.
Alexander Odle (men's volleyball) and
Martina Fedel (women's hockey) have been named 'Gryphon Athletes of the Week' for the period covering November 11 to 17, 2024.
Alexander Odle (Men's Volleyball)
Alexander Odle played an instrumental role for the Gryphons men's volleyball team this past weekend as he has been named 'Athlete of the Week'. Odle, a fifth-year right side player, was the team's leading attacker, helping the Gryphons to a weekend sweep over the Brock Badgers with victories on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday night (Nov. 15), the economics major made his impact on the court leading his team with 11 kills, 5 digs and 4 assisted blocks for a team-high 13 points in Guelph's straight sets win over the Badgers. The Mississauga native continued his outstanding weekend on the following night (Saturday, Nov. 16) as he had one his best matches of the season. Odle finished tied with a team-high 18 kills to go along with his 6 digs as the Gryphs defeated the Badgers in four sets to complete the weekend sweep. Odle currently sits 2nd in the conference with 102 kills, 3rd with 113 points and 10th with 46 digs in 8 games this season. Odle and the Gryphons men's volleyball team will wrap up their first half of the season before the Christmas break when they host the RMC Paladins this weekend (Nov. 22-23).
Martina Fedel (Women's Hockey)
Martina Fedel takes homes 'Athlete of the Week' honours following her stellar week in net for the Gryphons women's hockey team. Fedel, a fourth-year goalie from Trento, Italy, had herself a busy week starting in both her team's games over the weekend. On Friday night (Nov. 15) against the No. 7-ranked Nipissing Lakers, Fedel played a pivotal role in keeping the Gryphons in the game after allowing two goals in the first period, making 27 saves in the final 40 minutes. Despite the strong play in goal from Fedel, the Gryphs would end up on the wrong side of a 3-1 scoreline. The animal biology major was back on the ice the following night (Saturday, Nov. 16) when her team took on the Ottawa Gee-Gees, as she carried over the momentum from the final two periods from the night before, stopping all 24 shots sent her way, helping lead her team to a 3-0 win. The shutout was Fedel's third of the season in nine starts. Fedel has 7-2-0 record on the season and currently leads the OUA with a 0.90 goals against average and a .967% save percentage. Fedel and the Gryphons women's hockey team are back on the road for two games in Toronto this weekend starting on Thursday night (Nov. 21) at TMU and Saturday night (Nov. 23) at the University of Toronto.
