GUELPH, Ont. – On Saturday night (Nov. 9), the Guelph Gryphons men's basketball team fell to the Toronto Varsity Blues 85-68 at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre. The Gryphons see their record drop to 1-5 while the Varsity Blues improve to 4-2.
Despite the loss, the Gryphons received strong performances for several players, with four surpassing the 10 point mark. Third year forward
Eric Armstrong was the team's leading scorer on the night with 19 points.
Jack Tunstill had a great all-around game with 15 points to go along with his 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals.
Shaathon Walker also totaled 15 points while dishing out 4 assists and first-year guard
Amare Hamilton finished the game with 11 points.
After a low scoring first quarter, the Gryphons offence would come alive in the second quarter, outscoring the visitors 22-15 which included a thunderous dunk from
Jack Tunstill that got the ball rolling for the team as they took a 29-27 into halftime. The third quarter saw the Gryphons build on their lead, leading as much as 11 points in the quarter before Toronto closed out the final five minutes of the third on a 20-5 run to take a 54-50 lead heading to the fourth. The Varsity Blues would carry that momentum over to the fourth as they outscored the hosts 31-18 to pull away for the road win. Despite the scoreline being a 17-point margin, the final score didn't reflect how close the game was for much of the night.
The Gryphons (1-5) will travel to Thunder Bay as they take on the undefeated Lakehead Thunderwolves (6-0) on Friday night (Nov. 15) with opening tip scheduled for 8pm. Game from Thunder Bay can be seen live online on oua.tv.
