BASEBALL RECAP: Gryphons Edged Out by Brock in OUA West Regional Qualifier

GUELPH, Ont. – An incredible season of Gryphons baseball came to an end over the weekend as the Gryphons fell just short of advancing to the OUA final four, with Guelph eliminated by the Brock Badgers, 7-5, on Saturday (Oct. 5) in the final of the OUA West Regional Qualifier at Welland Stadium.

The Gryphon baseball team began play at the regional qualifier on Friday (Oct. 4) where the Gryphons took on the McMaster Marauders and Brock Badgers in a pair of games to determine seeding for the semifinals and finals on Saturday (Oct. 5), with only the winner of the three-team qualifier earning a spot in the 2024 OUA Baseball Championship Tournament. The Gryphon bats would come out swinging on Friday as they would cruise to a 13-2 win over the Marauders, invoking the 10-run mercy rule at the end of the 7th inning. The Guelph offence would continue to rake in their second game of the day against the Badgers, scoring 10 runs in the 5th inning as they would defeat Brock 20-16 to earn a bye as the top seed in Saturday's final.

The stage was set for Gryphons as they would meet the Brock Badgers in the final with a trip to the OUA Championship Tournament on the line. The start of the final did not go the way the Gryphons hoped for as they gave up two runs in the top of the 1st inning and trailed 2-0 early on. The Gryphs would battle back all afternoon chipping away at the Badger lead but eventually ran out of innings as a run in the 9th was not enough to overcome the early deficit, with the Badgers holding on to win 7-5, bringing the Gryphons 2024 campaign to an end.

Despite the exit in the final of the OUA West Regional Qualifier, the Gryphons put together an impressive 2024 season, finishing the season with a 20-7-1 overall record and a 10-2 record in conference play.
