WBB RECAP: Gryphons Bounce Back in Win over Gaels in Home Opener

GUELPH, Ont. – The Gryphons had an impressive showing on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 26), returning home to the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre as they bounced back their loss in the season opener to defeat the Queen's Gaels 83-54 in their home opener. A big second quarter from the Gryphons played a major role in the win as they outscored the Gaels 29-11 in the quarter, turning a 3 point lead into a 21 point lead at halftime. Third year guard Hannah Bourdon led all scorers with 17 points while shooting 7-13 from the field and grabbing 9 boards. Julia Colavecchia had a strong game scoring 14 points and making 3 of her 7 attempts from behind the arc.

After a good first quarter where the Gryphons led by three, they turned it up in the second quarter on both ends of the floor as they opened the quarter to an 11-0 run which saw their lead balloon to 32-18. From that point forward Guelph wouldn't look back, outscoring Queen's 46-19 in the middle two quarters to lead 67-31 after the third quarter as they would secure their first win of the season. The defence was locked in throughout the entire afternoon, holding the Gaels to 29.9% from the field forcing the visitors into tough shots throughout the game. Along with Bourdon and Colavecchia, Renee Armstrong (12 points) and Alexis Wright (10 points) scored in double-digits for the Gryphons.

The Gryphons (1-1) are back on home court on Thursday night (Oct. 31) when they host the Laurentian Voyageurs. Tip time from the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre is scheduled for 6pm, with tickets available online at gryphons.ca/tickets.
