GUELPH, Ont. – Wednesday night (Oct. 31) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the Gryphons women's basketball team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 57-44 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs (1-2). The Gryphons started off fast at home on Halloween night against the Voyageurs, with Guelph jumping out to an 18-7 lead after the opening quarter. In the opening half of play, five different players hit three-pointers for the Gryphons, who led by 11 at the half.
Early in the 3rd quarter, the Voyageurs would temporarily trim the deficit to single digits, but the Gryphons would close out the 3rd quarter strong. Gryphons second-year centre,
Keryl Ousey (Mount Gambier, Australia) would provide the biggest spark of the quarter, finishing off a nice drive to the rim and then immediately coming up with a steal on the ensuing Laurentian in-bounds pass. Ousey would find Gryphon teammate
Delaney Cortes (Conestogo, ON) for the basket, plus the foul, with Cortes hitting the free throw to complete the three-point play, giving Guelph a commanding 43-27 lead heading to the 4th, en route to the 57-44 victory.
Up next for the Gryphons (2-1), a Friday night (Nov. 1) matchup in Guelph against the Nipissing Lakers (1-1). Game time on Friday is set for 6pm with tickets available online at gryphons.ca/tickets.
