GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women's rugby team opened their 2023 season in dominant fashion, defeating the Brock Badgers 44-10 in front of 511 fans at Varsity Field. The Gryphons were unable to face off with the Badgers in regular season action in 2022, with the Badgers having forfeited their season-opening match.
The Gryphons found the try zone eight times with seven different student-athletes putting points up on the scoreboard.
Grace Jacklyn opened the scoring with an early try that started a 29-0 run for the Gryphons.
Natalie Armatage also impressed in her return to the pitch, scoring a pair of first-half tries. Despite a late push from the Badgers the Gryphons were able to answer back to ensure the home opening win with
Lara Jorgensen and Abby Auger both scoring in the final ten minutes. Kicking duties for the day were split for the Gryphons, with both
Grace Jacklyn and
Karenna Ottywill splitting the uprights for a pair of converts.
The Gryphons (1-0) will head on the road next weekend (Sept. 8) for a matchup with the McMaster Marauders before returning home. On September 16 the team will play host to the U of T Varsity Blues which will be the first match of a doubleheader for the Gryphons annual 'Rugby Day.'
