WHKY RECAP: Gryphons Suffer Double OT Loss to Lancers in Game 1 of OUA Quarterfinals

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team suffered a double-overtime, 1-0 loss to the Windsor Lancers on Wednesday night in Guelph, in a marathon Game 1 of their best-of-three OUA quarterfinal playoff series with Windsor. Lancers second-year forward, Emily Eikelboom, scored the game's only goal, beating Gryphon netminder Martina Fedel low, blocker side at the 7:19 mark of the second overtime period at the Gryphon Centre Arena, giving the visiting Lancers a hard-fought 1-0 win in Game 1. The best-of-three series will now shift to Windsor for Game 2 on Saturday afternoon.

The Gryphons, ranked No. 10 in the latest U SPORTS polls, earned the No. 2-seed in the OUA West Division after a strong regular season which saw them post an 18-4-5 record, while the Lancers finished 3rd in the division with a record of 15-11-1. The two teams met head-to-head three times during the regular season, with Guelph posting a 1-1-1 record in their three regular season matchups versus the Lancers. Both goalies stole the spotlight in Wednesday night's series opener, with Gryphons second-year netminder, Martina Fedel, turning away 26 of the 27 shots sent her way on the night, while Windsor's fourth-year goalie, Kristen Swiatochik, made 38 saves on the night for the shutout.

The Gryphons will look to keep their season alive on Saturday in Windsor, with puck drop set for 3pm at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.
