WHKY RECAP: Gryphons Win 3-0 Over Windsor in Game 2; Force Decisive Game 3 Sunday in Guelph

WINDSOR, Ont. – Saturday afternoon in Windsor, the Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team picked up a 3-0 road win over the Windsor Lancers to keep their 2022-23 season alive and force a decisive Game 3 back in Guelph on Sunday in their OUA quarterfinal series.

Maya Graham opened the scoring for the scoring for the Gryphons, re-directing home a Meaghan Chittick shot to give the visiting Gryphons the first goal of the game, and their first goal of the series after a hard-fought double-overtime 1-0 loss to the Lancers in Game 1.

In the 2nd period, the Gryphons would extend their lead to 2-0 thanks to a one-timer from team captain, Hannah Tait, at the 6:55 mark of the period. Later in the 2nd period, the Gryphon lead would grow to 3-0 when Sydnie Miller's shot through traffic was skillfully re-directed home by Jaime Magoffin. The three goals would prove to be more than enough for Gryphon goalie, Martina Fedel, who turned away all 21 shots sent her way for the shutout.

"We tweaked our game plan today and asked the forwards to have better net front presence and drive the net with layers," said Gryphons head coach Rachel Flanagan, who is now in her 16th season in charge of the U of G women's hockey program and has led the Gryphons to three OUA titles (2018-19, 2016-17 & 2015-16) as well as a national title in 2018-19. "Our 'D' did a great job of getting pucks through. It was a simple plan, but the team executed it well and the results were obviously what we wanted."

Puck drop on Sunday afternoon is set for 2:30pm at the Gryphon Centre. Tickets are available online at gryphons.ca/tickets and the game can also be seen live online at www.oua.tv.
