WHKY RECAP: Gryphons Shutout Lions, Improve to 5-1-1

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team continued their impressive start to the 2023-24 season on Saturday afternoon, picking up a 4-0 win over the York Lions at the University of Guelph's Gryphon Centre Arena. With the win, the No. 10-ranked Gryphons improve to 5-1-1 on the season, while the York Lions fall to 1-5-0. Gryphons third-year goalie, Martina Fedel, needed to make just 15 saves on the day for her first shutout of the 2023-24 season.

The Gryphons scored three goals in less than 3 minutes midway through the 2nd period, with rookie Reese Coffey opening the scoring, followed by goals from Tori Verbeek & Katherine Heard. Captain Hannah Tait would add an empty netter in the 3rd period for her OUA-leading 7th goal of the 2023-24 season, helping the Gryphons pick up their second win in the past three days after also taking three points on Thursday night versus Brock.

The Gryphons (5-1-1) temporarily move into 1st-place in the OUA West Division standings, and sit 1 point ahead of Laurier who plays at Windsor Saturday night. The Gryphons now enter a difficult stretch of their regular season schedule, with back-to-back road games against ranked opponents on tap. Next week, Guelph will head to Toronto to face the No. 5-ranked Varsity Blues on Friday night (Nov. 10), followed by a short turnaround with a game Saturday afternoon at the University of Waterloo against the No. 9-ranked Warriors.
