GUELPH, Ont. - Saturday night (Nov. 4) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre the Gryphons women's basketball team hosted the 2022-23 U SPORTS champion Carleton Ravens in their second game of the 2023-24 season. An early Ravens lead proved to be too much for the Gryphons, who would ultimately fall to Carleton 83-66 and move to 1-1 on the season. Third-year guard
Julia Colavecchia put on a career performance in the loss, scoring a game-high 22 points for a new career best. Colavecchia went 8-for-15 from the field with 5 three-pointers and added 5 rebounds. Teammates
Renee Armstrong and
Alexis Wright also had strong outings with Armstrong scoring 15 and Wright 10 on 50% shooting.
The Ravens got off to a hot start, outscoring the Gryphons 34-16 in the opening quarter while shooting 50% from the field and 70% from beyond the arc. Carleton guard Kali Pocrnic scored 14 of her 22 points to help build the Ravens early lead. The second quarter saw a much stronger performance from the Gryphons, holding the Ravens to 25% shooting and outscoring the visiting team 19-11 to head into the half down 10. The Gryphons were unable to replicate their second quarter performance in the second half with the Ravens stretching their lead in each period. The Gryphons would ultimately suffer their first loss to the defending national champions and move to 1-1 on the season.
The Gryphons will return to the court at the Gryphons Athletics Centre on Wednesday (Nov. 8) when they play host to the Waterloo Warriors. Tickets for Wednesday's game, along with the rest of the Gryphons home schedule, are available at gryphons.ca/tickets.
