GUELPH, Ont. – A late comeback attempt by the Gryphons women's basketball team fell short on Wednesday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, where the visiting Waterloo Warriors escaped Guelph with 58-51 win. The Warriors got off to a quick start, outscoring Guelph 17-7 in the opening quarter. The Gryphons (1-2), who entered Wednesday night's matchup 1-1 on the season after splitting games last weekend with Ottawa and Carleton, outscored Waterloo over the game's final three quarters, including a steal and a lay-in plus a foul by Gryphons second-year guard
Alexis Wright late in the 4th quarter which made it just a three-point game, with Waterloo's lead cut to 54-51. But that would be as close as the Gryphons would get, with Waterloo hitting their free throws down the stretch to seal the 58-51 win.
Alexis Wright finished the game with 13 points and 4 assists, while Gryphon teammate
Renee Armstrong 14 points and 5 rebounds. Gryphons third-year forward,
Lucy Tesseyman (London, ON) narrowly missed out on a double-double, contributing with 9 points and a team-high 11 rebounds on the night. The Warriors held the edge in three-point shooting on the night, with Waterloo connecting on 10 three-pointers on the night (10-for-26 from beyond, 38.5%), while the Gryphons struggled from deep, shooting just 5-of-30 from beyond the arc (16.7%). With the win, the Waterloo Warriors improve to 2-0 on the season, after having opened up their 2023-24 season with a road win over the York Lions back on November 3. The Gryphons (1-2) and Warriors (2-0) will meet up once again on Saturday afternoon, with the home-and-home matchup shifting to the University of Waterloo's Carl Totzke Court.
