FH RECAP: Delaney Jacklin Scores Twice to Advance Gryphons to OUA Semifinals

GUELPH, Ont. - Wednesday night at the Gryphons Soccer Complex the Guelph Gryphons field hockey team captured a 2-0 win over the Western Mustangs to advance to the OUA semifinal round. Third-year forward Delaney Jacklin scored two second half goals in an otherwise defensive battle to lead the Gryphons to the playoff victory. The team will now travel to Toronto Saturday night (Oct. 21) to take on the York Lions for the right to play for an OUA Championship.

The game started off with the Gryphons playing much of the first half in the defensive zone, yet generating the only quality scoring chances in the first two quarters. With neither team able to break the tie the two teams headed to halftime at a scoreless tie.

The Gryphons came out of the break immediately on the attack and backing the visiting Mustangs up into their defensive zone. The halftime adjustments paid off, with captain Elly Peters gaining possession in at midfield and sending a pass up the field to Madison Martin. Celebration vs Western 2023 (1/4 Final) Martin, a rookie midfielder, then found Delaney Jacklin alone above the Western defence who wasted no time getting a shot off to beat Mustang goaltender Alyssa Evans for the game's first score. The Gryphons kept the pressure on the Mustangs in the third, registering another pair of scoring chances to head into the final frame with momentum.

Coming into the final quarter it was another quick attack which led to the Gryphons second goal of the game. Elly Peters sent a crossing pass to Jacklin who once again picked the corner of the net to score her second of the game and give the Gryphons a commanding lead with just over 14 minutes to go. Despite a strong Mustang attack late in the game, stout defensive play by the Gryphons would limit any quality chances for Western to get back into the game and solidify the quarterfinal win for Guelph.

The Gryphons will now shift their focus to the No. 1-seeded York Lions, their semifinal opponent. The team will face off with the Lions this Saturday (Oct. 21) in Toronto with the match set to get underway at 5pm at York Alumni Field.
