FH RECAP: Gryphons Suffer 3-1 Semifinal Loss to the York Lions in Toronto

GUELPH, Ont. - On Saturday night (Oct. 21) in Toronto the Guelph Gryphons field hockey team saw their 2023 season come to close after suffering a 3-1 loss to the York Lions in the OUA semifinal round. Playing the U SPORTS No. 3-ranked Lions for the second consecutive year in the playoffs, the No. 5-ranked Gryphons surrendered a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes are were unable to recover from the early Lions lead. In the 28th minute Elly Peters found Ella Rideout to cut the York lead in half but another score from the home team in the 46th minute would solidify the win for the Lions. Despite the loss is was a disciplined effort from the Gryphons, who committed just 19 fouls to the Lions 43, but were unable to turn York fouls into offence as they were out-shot 4-2. Gryphon goalkeeper Maryam Maamoun made the only save of the evening while Peters and Rideout were the only U of G student-athletes to register shots. 

The York Lions advance to the OUA championship game, where they will host the University of Toronto Varsity Blues who defeated the Waterloo Warriors in the other semifinal.
