GUELPH, Ont. - Sunday afternoon (Oct 15) at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, the Gryphons men's soccer team hosted the Laurier Golden Hawks in a matchup of two OUA West Division rivals battling for playoff positioning. The visiting Golden Hawks produced a pair of second half goals, with Tristan Greenidge opening the scoring in the 54' minute, followed by a converted penalty from Sam Ghouli in the 77' minute, to propel Laurier to a 2-0 road win. Despite the result on Sunday, the Gryphons still sit 3 points clear of Laurier in the OUA West Division standings. The Gryphons now sit at 5-4-1(wins-losses-draws) on the season, while Laurier improves to 4-5-1. The Gryphons best scroing chance on Sunday afternoon came from third-year forward, Yuki Ibie. With the Gryphons trailing Laurier 1-0 in the 63' minute, Ibie came close to squaring the match at 1-1, only to see his header glance off the Laurier crossbar and stay out. Any hopes of a Gryphon comeback would be erased in the 77' minute when the Gryphons were called for a hand ball inside their own 18-yard box, leading to the Sam Ghouli penalty which extended the Golden Hawks lead to 2-0.
The Gryphons (5-4-1) will look to claim all six points currently remaining on their 2023 regular season schedule, with the Algoma Thunderbirds (0-6-4) set to visit the Gryphon Soccer Complex on Friday, October 20 (8:15pm) and Saturday, October 21 (3:15pm). The two games versus Algoma will mark the final two matches of the Gryphons 2023 OUA regular season schedule, with the playoffs set to begin on Wednesday, October 25.
