MSCR RECAP: Leo Shrimpton's Extra Time Goal Lifts Gryphons Over Thunderbirds

GUELPH, Ont. - On Friday night (Oct. 20) at the Gryphon Soccer Complex the Gryphons took on the Algoma Thunderbirds, looking to continue their push up the OUA standings heading into the playoffs. Second-year forward Leo Shrimpton's late game heroics, scoring in the 90th minute, helped lift the Gryphons over the Thunderbirds and steal 3 points in the conference standings. It was Shrimpton's first goal of the season and came thanks to a great assist from Ambrose Tinmouth who picks up his seventh point of the campaign. The Gryphons now find themselves holding a 6-4-1 record (wins-losses-draws) and in a tie for third in the OUA West Division. Rookie Dante Ruddock also found the back of the net in the contest, scoring his second goal in three games to give the Gryphons an early lead.

Goalkeeper Carter Robart was also busy on Friday night, stopping a pair of shots on goal while picking up his second win of the 2023 season. At the ther end of the pitch the Gryphons forced Algoma goalie Josh Bondoc to make plenty of saves, outshooting the Thunderbirds 9-3 on the night.

The Gryphons (6-4-1) will look to finish their 2023 season on a high tomorrow when they face the Thunderbirds in their regular season finale. They team will have a chance to capture a bye past the opening round of the postseason, trailing the 2nd-place York Lions by just two points. The Gryphons will have to scoreboard watch however, with the Lions taking on the division-leading Brock Badgers Sunday afternoon.
